Husbands or Kids

written by emma moore

Husbands or kids?
I'll take option three...

The seven year itch is creeping in
And he's been spending time wonderin'
If he rushed in to settling down

Sparks are flying and he's reminded

That he's still young, he's still got it

Makes no secret we could get along

Husbands or kids

I'll take option three

Too young, too sweet or complicated
Or unavailable feeling jaded

I'm no tick off a list

Or somebody's side piece

Tell me this ain't all there is

Husbands or Kids

Baby boy, he's got a teenage crush

He thinks he's in love, doesn't know enough

To know that there's so much he don't know

Tryna tell me we could be a match

And I'm so flattered he thinks that

But he can't even take me for a drink

Husbands or kids

I'll take option three

Too young, too sweet or complicated
Or unavailable feeling jaded

I'm no tick off a list

Or somebody's side piece

Tell me this ain't all there is

Husbands or Kids

All I'm asking for is that he not be taken

Or running late for school

Out of his momma's basement

Old enough to know how to treat a woman

And smart enough to know

One's the way to go

Husbands or kids

I'll take option three

Too young, too sweet or complicated
Or unavailable feeling jaded

I'm no tick off a list

Or somebody's side piece

Tell me this ain't all there is

Husbands or Kids

Finding Light in the Dark

We often find ourselves in situations where it seems like our only choices are to laugh or cry - and I always try to laugh.

That's certainly the case in this song, inspired by the catalogues of The Pistol Annies and Brandy Clark.

I went through a phase of what feels like my eternal singleton life, where the only guys interested in me were way too young, or even worse, already in relationships! I was laughing about it with a friend and the phrase Husbands and Kids flew out of my mouth and I knew I had to write it. Comedy may be rare in my writing but I can honestly say it's been a complete blast.

I feel like I just can't mention 'light in the dark' without a nod to my beloved world of Harry Potter. It's not often I take inspiration from too far outside of music, but these seem pretty great for todays song and themes.

"Curiosity is not a sin...
but we should exercise
caution with our
curiosity...
yes, indeed."

"It is our choices
that show us what
we truly are.
."

"Happiness can be
found, even in the
darkest of
times, if
one only remembers to
turn on the light."

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE

This is the oldest song on the record, was the first to be cut, and now opens the entire thing. It seems mad to me now that there was a time it wouldn't be the case! Throughout the process of recording it was tucked neatly in the middle, track three or four, and there it stayed for months - then two things happened.

The first was the Bass line, which in the incredible hands of Aubrey Harris, brought the entire song to a whole new level. She brought out the fun in the track and infused it with the perfect energy it was lacking beforehand, it's actually my favourite part of the track.

Months then passed, layers were added and vocals went down and the song snuck up on me slowly, until our phenomenal mixing and mastering engineer Eric Torres got his hands on it. Wow.

It was the first mix I got back. It was late at night, I'm trying to get to sleep an email pops up from my producer, Dakota. I'm hoping it's a mix, and there it is! I grab my headphones and I'm BLOWN AWAY at what I'm hearing.

My first thought? THAT'S how we kick off this record.
